I bought this awesome little MP3 Player "reconditioned" for $40 (shipped) from Buy.com. Before you think it, I have never owned an iPod and have no intentions of getting one anytime soon, so I cant make a comparison. The main reason I bought it was to put the open source RockBox MP3 player firmware on it, which can be downloaded free here. Apparently this firmware opens up a lot of the capabilities of the player (and many other players are supported as well). As soon as I opened it, I upgraded to Rockbox with no problems and I love the player! With Rockbox, you can also play a ton of simple games like Doom, Bejeweled, and Minesweeper. It says you can play videos too, but I haven't cared enough to give it a try.

The thing I require of an MP3 player is the ability to put music on with no 3rd party software. I want to plug it in to the computer and it act like an external drive. From what I understand, iPods require iTunes or some other syncing application. That pretty much seals the deal for me.
I like this little thing so much, that I am going to sell it to a guy in Mexico when I move, and then buy a new one when I get back to Texas. He has begged me for it all year! I would recommend it if you too like to play around with alternative uses of devices. Who cares if it voids the warranty. =]
