Death Race (2008)

Death Race (2008)I hadn't heard of this movie, maybe because I've been in Mexico for 2 years and the trailers probably didn't get as much airtime as most big budget flicks. Apparently it is a remake of a cult-classic called "Death Race 2000" from 1975. It has the guy from "Transporter" and I can't remember his name and don't want to pretend like I know it. He gives a good performance with the usual ass-kicking but always leaving me with a mystifying question, "how did his character learn to kick so much ass?" It also has the guy that plays Al Swearengen in the tv series Deadwood. I think that might be part of the reason I liked this movie. Anyway, it reminds me of most other movies about criminals in the future (but this one ironically close to us, taking place in 2012.) Not really a waste of time, I think it would be great for a Sunday night with a little chips n cheese.

It's cold in Texas

After finishing up 4th semester, packing up and leaving Guadalajara was surreal and reminded me of how it felt to leave Austin 2 years before.  The drive back was uneventful, I left at 7pm and arrived in McAllen at 7am.  I always say that the toll roads (Cuotas) are awesome and at night there is no one on the road, nothing different this time around except my car seemed sluggish due to it being stuffed with all my belongings.  After spending 24 hours in McAllen, I drove 6 more to Houston to see friends and family there.  Now, a week later, I arrived in Austin and am pretty much living out my car for 2 more weeks.  I want to get all my visiting out of the way so I can focus on preparing for the COMP exam that will be held January 23rd.  So, I'm here and it's freaking cold.  Did I mention that it's cold?  I never really thought much of it when I lived here, but at least it should be warmer in Miami.  Call me so we can get some pizza!

Katt Williams: It's Pimpin' Pimpin' (2008)

Katt Williams: It's Pimpin' Pimpin'The newest stand-up dvd from Katt Williams is hilarious!  I read a news article that he was admitted for a psych evaluation last week.  He's goin crazy and you can see it in this dvd lol!   Anyway, I found this funnier than his past stand-ups.  Kick back and have a drink with this one.  9 outta 10!

Tres Días [Before The Fall] (2008)

Tres Días [Before The Fall] (2008)This movie really took me by surprise!  It's a sci-fi/thriller that won an award at some film festival in Spain.  I remember hearing about it down in Guadalajara but didn't make the screening due to extreme studying.  If you enjoy foreign movies, I would encourage you to spend the 1.5 hours with this one.  Yes, it's in Spanish, but you can switch to English audio or (as I prefer) turn on the subtitles.  The actors weren't familiar to me, but they were excellent.   The story is original and it had the perfect mix of sci-fi and suspense.  Put some focus, this isn't one to watch if you can't pay close attention (reading subs, and following plot).  9 outta 10!

The X-Files: I Want To Believe (2008)

The X-Files: I Want To Believe (2008)Everyone knows about the TV show, but I doubt the average movie watcher would rush out to watch this unless they were a fan already. Which I can't say for myself. On one hand, the actors are excellent and I like the sci-fi nature of the show, but on the other it just moves too slow to keep me interested. This may be enjoyed by non-xfiles fans, but I would put my money elsewhere.

Fell asleep: yes, twice
Overall? wasted my time
Would I recommend? don't pay to watch it
Would I watch it again? no

Taken (2008)

Taken (2008)Liam Neeson stars in this 2008 action/thriller that rings of Man on Fire plus a little Jason Bourne. I liked it because in no way did it remind me of other "big-boom" no-plot modern action movies, it's a genuinely good movie that won't leave a bad taste in your mouth. 9 outta 10 stars from me.

A Painting That I Bought

Somewhere in MexicoLast week a friend and I went to the Eastern outskirts of Guadalajara to an area called Tonalá. This little city is well known for its bi-weekly artisan street market that sells all sorts of arts, crafts, pottery, etc. I've been several times now and bought various things each time. This time, after browsing through several art shops, some small and some large, I found something that I liked instantly. Don't you love it when something doesn't feel like a forced buy? I found a painting that reminds me of several places I have been in Mexico, and is now a part of who I am. The painting measures 28 inches high, and 36 inches wide.  Anyway, this woman's shop was smaller than my bedroom and covered wall to wall with art. She was sitting at an easel covered with paint and seemed excited that we came in. When I saw the painting I thought for sure she would want at least $100. Nope, it came out to 600 pesos, and with the current exchange rate being so good, that's less than $50 US in the end. To me it is worth 100 times that. Someday, I will look back and use it to remind me of my times in Mexico and how different life was.

Sandisk Sansa e260 4GB MP3 Player

I bought this awesome little MP3 Player "reconditioned" for $40 (shipped) from Buy.com. Before you think it, I have never owned an iPod and have no intentions of getting one anytime soon, so I cant make a comparison. The main reason I bought it was to put the open source RockBox MP3 player firmware on it, which can be downloaded free here. Apparently this firmware opens up a lot of the capabilities of the player (and many other players are supported as well). As soon as I opened it, I upgraded to Rockbox with no problems and I love the player! With Rockbox, you can also play a ton of simple games like Doom, Bejeweled, and Minesweeper. It says you can play videos too, but I haven't cared enough to give it a try.

 Sandisk Sansa e260

The thing I require of an MP3 player is the ability to put music on with no 3rd party software.  I want to plug it in to the computer and it act like an external drive.  From what I understand, iPods require iTunes or some other syncing application.  That pretty much seals the deal for me.

I like this little thing so much, that I am going to sell it to a guy in Mexico when I move, and then buy a new one when I get back to Texas.  He has begged me for it all year!  I would recommend it if you too like to play around with alternative uses of devices.  Who cares if it voids the warranty.  =]

Fred Claus (2007)

Fred Claus (2007)Starring Vince Vaughn, I felt this Christmas movie from 2007 was better than most modern holiday flicks. Not too corny or childish, and still really funny with Vince and a cameo from Ludacris.
